So I was scrolling through Instagram the other day, I came across this postpartum supermom, a gorgeous woman glowing in her delivery room photo. This woman is nonchalant of the everyday challenges of a postpartum mother. She is ready to conquer the world in her jeans. Hey if you feel like I can’t do what she is doing, don’t worry that’s just Instagram. For mortals, it is a whole different story altogether.
Postpartum Depression is one of the most common postpartum disorders in new mothers. Although “Baby Blues” is a lot more common in new mothers, PPD is much intense than the overwhelming emotions mothers experience during the first few days of childbirth.
Experiences may vary from person to person. What I understand from these recounting of experiences is that you can prevent your baby blues from developing into postpartum depression.
Things to be wary of
- Severe mood swings
- Guilt, shame
- Fear or panic
- Severe Exhaustion
- Lack of sleep or excess of sleep
- Lack of bond with the baby
Tips to manage your health postpartum
- Include superfoods in your diet. -Food has been shown to impact mood. Superfoods such as black beans, salmon help elevate the production of “happy hormones ” in the body
- Be physically active – childbirth is a physically exhaustive event. Try to include some movement in your routine after childbirth. If you are comfortable with postpartum exercises you can go ahead and follow them as a part of your routine
- Hydrate well – Breastfeeding mothers or not, your body goes through immense changes to get back to its normal after childbirth. Hydrate with enough water to aid your body with its mission
- Have your me-time – A small human totally dependent on you can be overwhelming at times. This is the time you can ask for help from your family and friends. You can ask them to help with your chores. Some Alone Time or time with family can help maintain your energy levels
- When in doubt, talk it out – If you feel if this is not ‘normal’ postpartum, any small changes you notice in your mood or appetite, please feel free to consult a doctor.
